Merlot Cabernet Franc Blends and Right Bank Wines - Advanced Workshop
Wednesday August 24, 2011
The Left Bank may have the most prestigious chateaux, but the Right Bank has been getting all the plaudits lately. Is it a revolution? Everything in modern Bordeaux winemaking started on the Right Bank - lower yields, strict sorting of grapes, cold fermentation. The resulting richness, ripeness and ultra-lush textures from the Merlot Cabernet Franc blends has grabbed the attention of the world. Join me to look at some of the benchmark wines from Pomerol and St Emilion lined up against some outstanding counterparts from Australia, including Orange where Merlot is superbly suited. Sadly Chateau Petrus is out of my budget, but the lineup will still be very impressive.

Gourmet Traveller WINE tasting of Grenache - to get advance notice of Peter's tasting please join the newsletter list
Wednesday August 17, 2011 - 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Grenache has had a long history in Australia although until recently it hardly ever appeared on a label. A versatile variety it was the most popularly grown variety in Australia until the 1960s, used as the basis for port and a major component of claret. Overtaken by Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon it seemed destined for obscurity in Australia. Grenache is fighting back due to the efforts of some new plantings as well as some old vines that have become elevated to the status of viticultural gold mines. Rich and complex with strawberry, raspberry and spicey, peppery characters, it is rightly being rediscovered as a single variety wine or as a component in the fashionable GSM blends. The panel as always has done the hard yards to find the best of these wines for you to try.
